Design and Destiny: The Making of the Tucker Automobile
Published in Paperback by On The Mark Publishing (February, 1990)
Authors: Philip S. Egan and Alex Tremulis
Average review score:

A Look at the Making of the Tucker Automobile
A little more than 50 years ago, Philip Egan, a young design engineer, had the opportunity to be part of Preston Tucker's dream. As a junior member of the New York based Lippincott team which helped design the prototype car, Egan took very careful notes of his first exposure to a full scale automotive design probject.

Where other books have focused on the drama of the human triumph and tragedy, Egan's focus is the car. However, the appeal of Design and Destiny reaches far beyond those interested only in the Tucker. The basic principles of automotive design are well illustrated. For those interested in creativity, the book provides valuable insight. Though other books and countles articles have been published on the Tucker saga, I believe Design and Destiny is something very special

Diver's Handbook of Underwater Calculations
Published in Paperback by Cornell Maritime Pr (December, 1980)
Author: Wayne C. Tucker
Average review score:

Exactly what the title says
This book is exactly what it says. It is like a Handbook of Physics for diving. You remember how you had to learn about pressure and volume and temperature relationships in you basic diving class? This book expands on those subjects and many others many fold. Also chapters on decompression calculations, salvage calcs, air supply calcs, waves, current, light and sound underwater. I have no idea how so much data could be fit into 182 pages, but Tucker seems to have done it. Obviously a knowledgable person, also a good writer. Well explained and wirtten, accurate and well illustrated. Mostly technical reference data, but if you are a diver I promise you won't fall asleep reading this.

Baseball and the American Dream
I found this book to be very insightful and well written. The author did a masterful job in relating his baseball experiences and allowing the reader to become part of the ultimate American Dream . . . owning your own baseball team. I can't wait until a sequal is published!

Dragon and the Cross: The Rise and Fall of the Ku Klux Klan in Middle America
Published in Hardcover by Archon (October, 1991)
Author: Richard K. Tucker
Average review score:

Even better Than I Hoped
Although this book bears the legend 'The Rise And Fall Of The KKK In Middle America' it's really the story of the rise and fall of charismatic Grand Dragon David Stephanson and the Klan of Indiana. Of course, that is not a bad thing, because the story is quite fascinating, and as the author deftly points out, still relevant today.
Stephenson, something of a near do well, finds success and almost unlimited power through the newly reborn KKK of the twenties. Although he seemed to have little use for the philosophy that drove the organization he still was able to use it to propel him to a position of prominence similar to political bosses like Tweed or like minded populists like Huey Long. He even dreamed of one day becoming President, and according to some accounts, a strong man in the style of Mussolini.
The Klan of the twenties had little relation to either its predecessors or it's ancestors of today, except for the ceremonies, the hood and the hatred. In fact, they had more in common with Christian right groups like The Moral Majority. The Klan of the twenties, modern sympathizers may want to note, was more concerned with the dangers of papists than of blacks. Indeed, the anti-catholic nature of the Klan was the probably the predominate feature of the organization, and one of the reasons they opposed Democratic President aspirant Al Smith. The other reason of course was 'demon rum'. We tend to forget the importance of wets and drys in the era of prohibition, but the KKK of the 20s were as much about moral crusading and nationalism as Catholic bashing. Made up of WASPs of the fundamentalist persuasion, they attempted to impose their moral values on everyone, much like right wingers today, and much like right wing groups today, their leader failed to live up to the diktat's he wished to impose on others.
Stephenson, himself a drunk and slut, fell from grace after causing the demise of a young girl whom he desired. He kidnapped her, he raped her, he bit her viciously and did not bother to get her help when she took poison in response to his amorous attentions. Stephenson's minions mostly abandoned him at this point, except those that denied it ever took place. Indeed, despite his overt threats, even the politicians that he owned were willing to be exposed rather than defend him. One might think that moral crusaders of our own time could learn a lesson from this true-life parable, but that is perhaps asking too much.

The Duke Ellington Reader
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (October, 1993)
Author: Mark Tucker
Average review score:

superb book but not for the new intitiate
This is one of the finest books I have read on Duke Ellington, beautifully and intricately compiled and with the voices of many on DE. It is a superb read for the Ellington aficanado; however, for new intiates to the Duke I wouls recommend Duke Ellington: A spiritual Biography by Janna Steed, an excellent boook but not quite so hefty and with a strong emphasis on his sacred music and concerts. But, for you aficiandos, Tucker's book is the tops!

El Tiempo Que Tardo Tomas
Published in Paperback by Lectorum Pubns (Juv) (01 January, 1998)
Authors: Nick Sharratt, Stephen Tucker, and J. Davis
Average review score:

Even reluctant readers want to pick up this book and read.
This book is FUNNY.

I have read "Tomás" to my students for two years. They love the colorful cartoon-like illustrations, the funny sounds in the "talking bubbles," and how naughty Tomás is.

The text is easy for emergent readers to handle themselves. Much of the text is presented in short utterances or simple sentences. The longer section in the middle of the book is done rebus-style.

I laughed myself silly the first time I read the book, then I shared it with my co-workers, who also cackled.

It's worth buying for your permanent collection.

Great humor for us confirmed geeks
If you are a geek like me, Explosive Cargo will at times make you laugh till milk squirts out your nose. Other times, the author is sentimental, wistful...

Just plain a good read, IMHO.
